I really have no idea how this flew under my radar, but folks are working to establish a co-op grocery on the near east side of Indianapolis. Not only would the project provide a brick and mortar business for an area of town that has little but gas stations and fast food, but it could provide high-quality food options to people who currently have access to “ghetto groceries” – orange pop, neck bones, and nearly rotten vegetables. Add in the fact that the group seems focused on buying from local producers and you have something that could have a significant impact on the local economy, ecology, and culture. Check out the site linked above or read the group’s blog.
