Newspapers haven’t always been behind the eight ball in terms of new media. In fact, in the late ’90s, several newspapers had fantastic websites. The problem was they couldn’t find ways to make money from the web (or ‘monetize’ it as people like to say) so when the dot com bubble burst, they regressed. The question now is not whether newpapers will survive in their current form. They won’t. The question is what will replace them, and will current new gathering organizations currently structured around a print product be able to radically alter their businesses and adapt to the way their audience wants to receive and use information? I have my own ideas. What do you think?
