“What do we do with these,” Johnny Depp asked, looking at the wireless microphone in his hand. Michael Mann, the producer and director of “Public Enemies,” had just given a short speech and introduced his co-producer and the film’s primary players in Depp, Christian Bale, and Marion Cotillard. With no clear conclusion, the group stood awkwardly until Depp’s query, after which he offered to sing a song he had written special for the occasion. Having painted himself in a corner, he tried to pass off the gag to Bale who was having none of it. Then he asked Cotillard to sing but she agreed on the condition that they would sing together. The weird Abbott & Costello “i’ll sing if you sing, no you first,” routine played out for a moment before the lights went down and the premiere screening of the John Dillinger biopic began. To hear any more about the film and the man who inspired it, you’ll have to check back on Thursday when the first of my multiple John Dillinger stories hits the streets and the web.
