Homespun On Basic Cable

Written by Taffy

Yesterday someone asked me to send them a link to my blog post about the video shoot in our back yard. When I went looking for it I realized I never wrote one. I uploaded photos to Facebook and Tweered about it and talked to all my friends and family about the experience but in the crush of job, craft fair, craft store, and pregnant wife-related responsibilities, I neglected to create an entry here about the experience.

In case you don’t already know…as a result of our winning a Pepsi Refresh grant, we were selected to be featured in a nation-wide Pepsi advertisement that would air on MTV, VH1, Spike, Comedy Central, and Nick Teen. It took a while to make sense of the whole plan, which is basically this; rather than produce ads where people cavort at a picnic and crack open sweaty cans of ice-cold Pepsi, the company was paying MTV, and a subcontractor, Ghost Robot, to create documentary-style advertorial spots focusing on Pepsi Refresh grant winners. So on Saturday, April 10 we hosted a faux craft fair in our back yard, we asked a bunch of our friends to come over, and some people from New York City showed up to shoot video of it and talk to us about Homespun. It was an interesting experience, one made surreal by watching ourselves on MTV when the spot launched earlier this month.

The crew from MTV and Ghost Robot was super easy to work with and we felt like they really understood what we’re trying to accomplish and why it matters so much to us. That understanding definitely shaped the creation of the spot, which we hope to be able to share with you online sometime soon. In the mean time, enjoy this “behind the scenes” video that I cut together and scan through the aforementioned networks to see if you can’t catch us and our friends on national television.
